The simple present is not used as often as in Dutch, because it is not about the present in the first place.
It is about something that happens more often.
The action is repeated, or a habit. He often walks in the park.
She usually has toast for breakfast.
We always go on holiday in Brighton.
Every evening they play cards.
It is about something general (it is always like that) Water boils at 100 centigrades.
Ghosts don't exist.

In many sentences there are clues that tell you:
use the simple present.

Words like:

often, usually, always, sometimes
every (evening, morning, Sunday...)
